Hajj
A look back
Two year ago, around this time I was at Hajj; it was one of the most centering and soul cleansing experiences of my life. During that time I journaled regularly and took pictures whenever I had time. I set aside all the photos from that trip for a year. Just as I was coming to a 1 year anniversary of my Hajj, I went through these images carefully and each of these shots are bringing back these memories.
I was totally stumped when Debbie Carlos asked me to submit an image from Hajj for her Democracy Print Series. She ended up looking through all of my photos and curating the above image herself; it still remains one of my favorites. During Hajj, pilgrims wear these two white pieces of cloth to avoid attracting attention. The white color symbolizes outer and inner cleanliness. No matter what your social status, everyone looks the same at Hajj. Sidenote: check out the amazing pieces of art Debbie has curated for this series on her website.
At the time of this posting, she has raised money for several amazing organizations with this series:
$609 TO THE ACLU
$770 TO UNICEF
$680 TO RAICES
$512.50 TO RAINFOREST TRUST
