Time at the museum

Since the very first exhibition, I have had the luxury of walking through each exhibition at the MSU Broad Art Museum before it opens to the public. Usually, I am either accompanied by the artist or one of the curators at the Broad Museum. I savor every single one of these experiences because very few people get to hear about these works from the artist. A few days after these mid-installation walkthroughs, my job is to photograph the idea the artist and curator are trying to get across to their audience.

Since my very first project for the Broad, I remember being told that Zaha Hadid’s architecture can sometimes overwhelm people and the art that lives within the building. Over the years, I have become so intimately aware about each gallery in this museum. I have figured out how art looks in each space, where light falls, and how that light changes through out the day. My goal is to show architecture but more importantly, show how art lives and is experienced in this building.

This was a really special multi-gallery exhibition of Michel Parmentier’s work. The late artist’s family were there for my walkthrough during the installation. I felt this aura of excitement to take in these huge pieces and to try to convey what it felt like to be in these galleries. The very last photo in this series is amongst my favorites because it shows the scale of Parmentier’s work and the awe you feel walking amongst these galleries.
